Where it came from
The Griffin token was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United Commander set, a collection of supplemental cards designed for the popular Magic: The Gathering multiplayer format. It serves as a visual aid for players whose decks include cards that create Griffin creature tokens, such as certain spells or permanent effects. These tokens are functional accessories that represent creatures on the battlefield rather than cards that are shuffled into a deck.
The art for this token was produced under the creative direction of Wizards of the Coast, continuing the tradition of high-fantasy creature design that defines the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. The design emphasizes the iconic avian-feline hybrid anatomy central to the Griffin's lore within the game, aiming to provide a clear and evocative representation that aligns with the classic visuals of the Dominaria setting.
