Where it came from
The Griffin token from the Dominaria Remastered set was released by Wizards of the Coast in early 2023. This product was designed as a curated retrospective of the Magic: The Gathering history associated with the plane of Dominaria, which has served as the central setting for the game since its inception in 1993. Tokens in these remastered sets serve to support gameplay mechanics where cards generate creature tokens, and they are frequently stylized to reflect the classic aesthetic of the era they commemorate.
The art for this token continues the tradition of mythological representation within Magic: The Gathering. Griffins have been a staple creature type in the game's white color identity since the Alpha set. While the token was produced for a modern release, the design leans into the high-fantasy tradition established by early illustrators of the game, prioritizing a familiar, heroic depiction of the legendary beast to ensure it remains visually compatible with the wide variety of cards from the game's thirty-year history.
