Where it came from
The Griffin token was released in 2020 as part of the Core Set 2021 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens are functional game pieces used to represent temporary creatures created by various cards during gameplay, such as the effect of the card 'Pack Leader' or other spells that summon avian constructs. In this set, the tokens were designed to visually align with the high-fantasy aesthetic of the core collection, serving as a standardized reference for players during matches.
The illustration was crafted by artist Caio Monteiro, who focused on capturing the classic mythological hybridity of the griffin. By combining the features of a lion and an eagle, the design seeks to convey a sense of nobility and predatory grace consistent with the creature's lore. Upon its release, the token was well-received by the player base for its clean, expressive artwork, which successfully differentiates it from the creature tokens found in previous expansions.
