Where it came from
Ground Rift was released in 2006 as part of the Time Spiral set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed by Wizards of the Coast as a nostalgic homage to the game's history, featuring mechanics that referenced early eras of play and including 'timeshifted' reprints. This specific card introduced the storm mechanic to a red sorcery, allowing players to replicate the spell based on the number of other spells cast during the same turn.
The artwork for Ground Rift was created by artist Trevor Hairsine, known for his work in both fantasy illustration and mainstream comic books. The design aesthetic reflects the chaotic, earth-shaking theme of the card, depicting a sudden geological disruption. Upon its release, it became a notable utility card in competitive formats due to its ability to neutralize multiple blockers, fitting into the high-synergy playstyle prioritized by the Time Spiral design team.
