Where it came from
Willbender was originally printed in the Legions set in 2003, but this specific iteration was released in 2019 as part of the Commander 2019 'Faceless Menace' preconstructed deck. The card is designed to support the morph mechanic, a complex feature first introduced in the Onslaught block that allows players to cast creatures face-down as colorless 2/2s. By including this reprint, the designers aimed to reinforce the utility of morph-based strategies, providing players with a classic defensive tool capable of redirecting spells or abilities at a moment's notice.
The artwork for this printing was created by artist Jesper Ejsing. His interpretation of the Willbender emphasizes the character's ephemeral and reality-warping nature, consistent with the morph theme of masking one's true form until the optimal moment. Within the Commander format, the card is frequently cited by players for its efficiency and ability to disrupt opponents' plans unexpectedly, maintaining a status as a staple for decks focused on triggered abilities and interaction.
