Where it came from
Hanweir Militia Captain was released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a double-faced creature, a mechanic reflecting the set's gothic horror theme where characters transform under the influence of the plane's corruption. This specific version is a promotional variant, distributed through the Friday Night Magic program to encourage local game store participation.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized the transformation mechanic to depict the character's descent into fanaticism. The design serves as a narrative piece, showing a local militia leader who rallies troops before eventually succumbing to the Eldrazi influence pervasive in the set. It was received favorably by players for its utility in 'go-wide' strategies, where the ability to flip into the powerful Westvale Cult Leader provides a significant late-game advantage.
