Where it came from
Tamiyo's Journal was first released as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion in 2016, a set centered on a gothic horror narrative involving the corruption of the plane of Innistrad. The card serves as both a functional artifact in gameplay and a key narrative device, representing the mystical research of the moonfolk planeswalker Tamiyo as she investigates the unnatural madness plaguing the world. The design team sought to capture the feeling of investigative progression, utilizing the 'clue' mechanic to reward players for gathering information.
The promotional version, designated 265s, features distinct artwork by artist Daarken. It was distributed through Wizards of the Coast's organized play channels, often as a participation or placement prize at game stores during the release window. The illustration emphasizes the journal's ethereal, magical properties, set against the dark, ominous atmosphere of the Innistrad setting. It is widely regarded by collectors as a centerpiece of the set due to its direct connection to the storyline's protagonist.
