Where it came from
Happily Ever After was released in 2019 as part of the Throne of Eldraine expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set drew heavily from European folklore and Arthurian legend, reimagining these classic tropes through the game's high-fantasy lens. This particular card serves as a whimsical, meta-textual nod to the 'happily ever after' conclusion found in traditional fairy tales, requiring the player to satisfy a complex set of conditions to win the game instantly.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Daarken, who leaned into the vibrant, storybook aesthetic that defines the Throne of Eldraine set. The artwork depicts a sprawling, idyllic scene intended to evoke the final pages of a storybook. Upon release, it was received as a flavorful 'build-around' card, challenging players to construct decks that could manage the varied resource requirements necessary to trigger its alternate win condition.
