Where it came from
The Happy Dead Squirrel sticker sheet was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These stickers were introduced to facilitate a new mechanic involving the permanent placement of stickers on cards, allowing players to modify the stats and names of their creatures during game play. The design reflects the whimsical, tongue-in-cheek aesthetic characteristic of the 'Un-' series, which playfully subverts traditional game rules.
The art was created by illustrator Lindsey Look, who focused on balancing the morbid theme with a humorous, lighthearted tone. By blending a classic cartoonish aesthetic with the dark humor of a reanimated squirrel, the design serves as a commentary on the game's long-standing affinity for squirrel-themed cards. It was received by the player community as a creative, albeit complex, integration of physical tabletop accessories into the established rules of the game.
