Where it came from
Happily Ever After was released in 2019 as part of the Throne of Eldraine set for Magic: The Gathering. The set drew heavy inspiration from Arthurian legend and classic fairy tales, reimagining these tropes through a whimsical yet structured lens. The card was designed as a rare enchantment intended to function as an alternate win condition, requiring a player to satisfy a complex set of conditions that mimic the traditional narrative arc of a storybook ending.
The illustration was created by artist Jason Rainville, who leaned into the vibrant, storybook aesthetic that defined the set's visual identity. The composition features a grand banquet scene, emphasizing the communal and celebratory themes inherent in fairy tale conclusions. Upon release, the card was received primarily as a flavorful 'build-around' piece, appreciated by players who enjoy complex, non-traditional strategies in casual and Commander formats.
