Where it came from
Herd Migration was released as part of the Dominaria United set in September 2022, serving as a thematic cornerstone for the set's focus on Domain mechanics. The card was designed to evoke the scale and grandeur of the Dominarian landscape, specifically reflecting the migratory patterns of the Kavu, an iconic creature type deeply rooted in the history of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Its inclusion in the Dominaria United Promos, specifically bearing the collector number 165s, marks it as a variant piece intended to highlight the set's celebration of the plane's return to its roots.
The artwork for this card captures a sprawling vista, emphasizing the ecological diversity of Dominaria through the depiction of massive beasts moving across a shifting terrain. In line with the design philosophy of the era, the card was constructed to offer players a utility-focused experience, balancing its role as a ramp spell with the potential for board presence. Upon its release, it was well-received by players focusing on land-based strategies, as its ability to fetch multiple basic land types provided essential stability for multicolor decks during the set's competitive cycle.
