Where it came from
Herd Migration was released in September 2022 as part of the Dominaria United expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the set's focus on the return to the iconic plane of Dominaria, specifically leaning into green's color identity through domain mechanics and creature ramp. It serves as both a utility card for land searching and a late-game threat by creating a large beast token.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering artistic community. Villeneuve focused on the epic, sweeping scale of the migration, capturing the essence of the wild nature found in the set's lore. The card was received favorably by players for its flexibility in draft environments and its ability to act as a bridge between early-game resource setup and late-game board presence.
