Where it came from
Ajani, Sleeper Agent was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Dominaria United. The card depicts the character Ajani Goldmane after his secret corruption by the Phyrexians, a long-standing antagonistic force in the game's multiverse. This version of the card was designed to reflect his new role as an infiltrator, utilizing the planeswalker card type to demonstrate his shifting allegiances and corrupted power set.
The artwork for this specific card was illustrated by Chris Rahn, a prominent Magic: The Gathering artist known for his dramatic and character-focused style. Rahn was tasked with capturing the jarring transformation of a beloved heroic figure into a sinister agent of the Phyrexians. Upon its debut, the card was widely discussed by players for its role in the narrative arc of the Dominaria United storyline and its unique mechanical identity within the Phrexian-themed expansions of that era.
