Where it came from
The Hero of Bladehold was originally introduced as a mythic rare card in the Mirrodin Besieged set in early 2011. The Magic Player Rewards version, issued later that year, was produced as a promotional foil card to incentivize active participation in tournament play. This card features distinct, stylized alternate artwork by artist Igor Kieryluk, who was commissioned to provide a fresh visual interpretation of the character that contrasted with the original release.
The design of the card emphasizes themes of leadership and military momentum, reflecting the setting of the Mirran resistance against the Phyrexian invasion. Players frequently sought out this version due to the card's high power level in competitive formats like Modern and Legacy, where its ability to generate tokens and boost an army made it a staple. The promotional art remains highly regarded by collectors for its polished aesthetic and the unique status it holds within the 2011 reward series.
