Where it came from
Heron's Grace Champion was released as part of the Eldritch Moon set in July 2016, specifically appearing as a promotional card for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to highlight the flavor of the Innistrad plane, a gothic horror-themed setting, where the character depicts a Human Knight serving the cause of Avacyn against the encroaching eldritch corruption. This specific version features alternate art created by Magali Villeneuve, an artist highly regarded within the community for her ability to balance high-fantasy aesthetics with dynamic, emotive character design.
The promotional nature of this card stems from the 'Buy-a-Box' program, an initiative by Wizards of the Coast intended to incentivize players to purchase full sealed booster boxes from local game stores. The illustration captures the champion in a moment of stoic resolve, a visual narrative that resonated with collectors who value the cohesive world-building of the Innistrad block. While mechanically functional, the card is frequently sought after by enthusiasts of the Human tribal archetype for its thematic cohesion and the distinct visual signature of its promo-exclusive art.
