Where it came from
Hewed Stone Retainers was released in early 2015 as part of the Fate Reforged set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set served as the middle chapter of the Khans of Tarkir block, focusing on a time-travel narrative where players revisit the past of the plane of Tarkir to witness the shift toward a timeline dominated by dragons. The card depicts a magically animated construct, reflecting the set's emphasis on the ancient, war-torn aesthetic of a world before the draconic transition.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Lucas Graciano, whose digital painting style emphasizes the heavy, chiseled texture of the stone construct. The design intent was to visually represent the rigid, defensive nature of the creature within the game's mechanics, where it functions as a stalwart protector. Upon its release, it was regarded as a standard functional piece within the limited draft environment of the set, praised by players for its thematic consistency with the rugged, monochromatic stone-work aesthetic established for the set's non-dragon-aligned factions.
