Where it came from

Grim Contest was released in early 2015 as part of the Fate Reforged set, the middle chapter of the Khans of Tarkir block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to mechanically capture the flavor of the block’s central narrative, which involved time travel and the alteration of history to reshape the warlike clans of the Tarkir plane.

The artwork was provided by Phill Simmer, whose illustration depicts the brutal, strength-based combat aesthetic of the Abzan Houses.
