Where it came from
The Sibsig Host was released in 2015 as part of the Fate Reforged set for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Tarkir, the expansion explored a timeline where the dragon lord Silumgar dominated the Sultai Brood, a clan obsessed with dark magic and necromancy. The card was designed to represent the rank-and-file undead soldiers subservient to the dragon's will, mechanically emphasizing the graveyard-recursion themes prevalent in the set's black-aligned cards.
The artwork for the Sibsig Host was created by artist Nils Hamm, known for his distinctively moody and painterly style within the game. Hamm focused on capturing the decaying, ethereal nature of the Sultai undead, utilizing a muted, swampy color palette that reflects the oppressive atmosphere of the clan's territory. The illustration was received as a quintessential example of the set's visual identity, grounding the game's high-fantasy mechanics in a grim, visceral aesthetic.
