Where it came from
Hijack was originally printed in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering set Ixalan, drawing thematic inspiration from the exploration-focused, seafaring aesthetic of that expansion. The card functions as a red sorcery that allows a player to temporarily take control of an opponent’s creature, a classic red-aligned ability that emphasizes impulsive, short-term gain consistent with the chaotic nature of the color in the game's philosophy.
The art for this specific printing, illustrated by Johannes Voss, depicts a pirate mid-maneuver, capturing the high-seas adventure theme of the Ixalan block. As part of 'The List'—a curated selection of reprints included in set boosters—this version serves to reintroduce older mechanics and art styles to new players, maintaining the card's mechanical identity while placing it within the contemporary design framework of modern Magic product distributions.
