Provenance

Where it came from

Howling Mine was originally released in the 1993 Alpha set as a core component of early Magic: The Gathering gameplay, designed to force a symmetrical resource draw that significantly altered the pace of matches. The specific version known as Summer Magic, or Edgar, was a limited promotional reprint produced by Cartamundi in 1994 intended to correct various printing errors found in the Revised edition. Due to a warehouse flood and a subsequent decision to destroy the vast majority of the stock, this iteration became one of the rarest artifacts in trading card history.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Dameon Willich, who captured the item’s flavor through a surreal, cavernous depiction that hints at the chaotic energy contained within the artifact. The design was intended to balance power with risk, as the owner shares the benefit of the extra card draw with their opponent. Upon its rediscovery by the community years later, the Summer Magic print was received with immense reverence, largely because it represents an accidental relic of early production instability rather than a traditional release.
