Provenance

Where it came from

Howling Mine first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a unique artifact that forced both players to draw extra cards. This mechanic, known as group hug, shifted the game's tempo by rewarding both the controller and the opponent simultaneously. The Unlimited Edition, released in late 1993, served as the second core set for the game and is physically distinguished from the limited Alpha and Beta releases by its crisp white borders.

The card's iconic illustration was created by artist Amy Weber. Her work on this piece captures a haunting, mystical atmosphere that became a hallmark of the game's early aesthetic. At the time of release, players were still discovering the strategic nuances of deck thinning and resource advantage, and Howling Mine quickly became a staple for combo decks that aimed to manipulate card flow, cementing its legacy as a foundational piece of Magic history.
