Swamp

The Swamp card from the Unlimited Edition of Magic: The Gathering was released in 1993 as part of the game's second print run. Following the rapid sell-out of the Limited Edition Alpha and Beta sets, Wizards of the Coast produced Unlimited to meet the overwhelming demand from new players. Unlike its predecessors, this set featured a distinct white border, a design choice intended to clearly differentiate the reprinted cards from the original limited pressings that had already begun to appreciate in value among early adopters.

The artwork for this specific card is attributed to Dameon Willich, who contributed several landscape illustrations for the game's foundational basic lands. The visual direction for the Swamp cards was rooted in the dark, moody fantasy aesthetic established by the initial art director, Jesper Myrfors. Willich's design sought to evoke a sense of damp, foreboding isolation, utilizing a muted color palette that became a defining look for the black mana archetype during the game's formative years.
