Mox Pearl

The Mox Pearl was released in 1993 as part of the original Magic: The Gathering base set, later known as Limited Edition Alpha and Beta. The Unlimited Edition, which featured the same artwork and game mechanics, followed shortly thereafter in 1993, serving as the first run to utilize a white-bordered card frame. As one of the five 'moxen' artifacts, the card was designed by Dan Dan Frazier to represent a powerful source of mana acceleration, allowing players to cast spells more rapidly than their opponents.

The design of the card reflects the early aesthetic of Magic: The Gathering, characterized by hand-painted fantasy illustrations that defined the game's identity. Upon its release, the card's extreme utility in competitive play quickly established it as a cornerstone of the game's most powerful decks. Because these cards were printed before the developers fully understood the long-term implications of such efficient mana generation, they were eventually restricted or banned in most tournament formats, cementing their status as legendary artifacts in the history of trading card games.
