Provenance

Where it came from

Hurricane was released in 1997 as part of the Anthologies set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique in its mission to reprint iconic and influential cards from the game's earliest years, providing players with access to essential utility cards that had become difficult to acquire. The card itself, which allows a player to deal damage to all flying creatures and players, originated in the game's very first Alpha printing in 1993, representing the core green philosophy of using nature's raw power to answer aerial threats.

The artwork for this version was rendered by Anson Maddocks, one of the original artists who helped define the game's early visual identity. Maddocks utilized a distinct, somewhat surreal style that leaned into the visceral nature of the spell, depicting a swirling vortex of energy. While the card's mechanics were considered a staple of green deck building throughout the 1990s, the Anthologies printing is particularly noted by collectors for its clean card frame and its role in preserving the history of early game interactions.
