Provenance

Where it came from

Hurricane was originally released as part of the Alpha and Beta sets in 1993 for the trading card game Magic: The Gathering. Created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the card was designed as a direct-damage sorcery that reflected the game's early emphasis on elemental themes. Its mechanics, which deal damage to every creature with flying and every player, were intended to punish airborne strategies while simultaneously threatening the caster's own life total, creating a high-risk, high-reward dynamic that became a staple of the green color identity.

The Fourth Edition version, released in 1995, features updated white-bordered styling that distinguished the base set from the earlier, limited-run expansions. The illustration, created by Melissa Benson, captures the chaotic essence of the storm with a classic fantasy aesthetic that defines much of the game's early visual language. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in multiplayer formats, solidifying its status as a foundational utility spell during the game's mid-nineties expansion period.
