Provenance

Where it came from

Hurricane was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the inaugural print run of Magic: The Gathering by Wizards of the Coast. Designed by Richard Garfield, the set aimed to introduce a new type of strategy game that combined the mechanics of traditional card games with the depth of fantasy role-playing. As a green sorcery, Hurricane was intended to reflect the color's identity of direct damage and anti-air capabilities, allowing players to impact both opponents and flying creatures simultaneously.

The artwork for Hurricane was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a central figure in the early aesthetic of Magic. His style, characterized by sweeping lines and a unique, painterly interpretation of fantasy, helped define the visual language of the game's earliest sets. Upon release, Alpha cards were noted for their distinct rounded corners and saturation issues caused by the initial manufacturing process, which has since contributed to their status as foundational artifacts in the history of trading card games.
