Where it came from
Hurricane was originally released as part of the Deckmasters set in 2001, a commemorative boxed set designed to celebrate the history of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was curated to include iconic reprints from the game's earliest editions, providing players with updated artwork and a unified aesthetic for some of the most influential cards in the game's competitive history.
The card itself is an illustration by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and beloved artists from the game’s formative years. Rush’s design captures the chaotic, sweeping power of a natural disaster, rendered in the distinctive, textured style that defined his contributions to early Magic expansions. The card was received by collectors as a nostalgic touchstone, highlighting the enduring impact of fundamental gameplay mechanics that had helped build the hobby's foundation throughout the 1990s.
