Hyena Umbra

Hyena Umbra was released as part of the Planechase 2012 set, which expanded on the multiplayer format introduced by Wizards of the Coast to simulate planeswalking through various locations in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. This specific card, an aura enchantment with the totem armor mechanic, was designed to provide players with a strategic way to protect their creatures from destruction while granting a combat boost, reflecting the resilient and predatory themes associated with the Zendikar plane where the card's visual identity is rooted.

The card's striking illustration was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who was tasked with visualizing the essence of a hyena-like spirit form. In the context of the game's design, the artwork captures the spectral, predatory nature of the creature, aligning with the Umbra subtype’s aesthetic of ethereal, protective spirits. Upon its introduction, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency, particularly in the Commander format, where totem armor remains a favored mechanic for safeguarding key creatures against removal spells.
