Where it came from
Hyena Umbra was originally introduced in the 2010 Magic: The Gathering set Rise of the Eldrazi. The card represents the Umbra armor mechanic, which features cards that enchant creatures and provide a protective layer, allowing the creature to survive destruction effects. This specific printing comes from the 2016 Planechase Anthology, a collection designed to consolidate various multiplayer-focused decks and cards from the game's history into a single comprehensive release.
The artwork for Hyena Umbra was illustrated by Zoltan Boros, who captured the primal, totem-like aesthetic of the Zendikar plane. The design team intended for the card to reflect the Zendikari survivors' reliance on makeshift, magically infused armaments to defend against the encroaching Eldrazi threat. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in providing both an offensive buff and a defensive shield for low-cost creatures in aggressive deck archetypes.
