Provenance

Where it came from

Hyena Umbra was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It belongs to the Aura subtype and introduced the 'Totem Armor' mechanic, a thematic design choice intended to protect creatures from destruction by sacrificing the Aura instead. The set itself was defined by the arrival of the terrifying, world-consuming Eldrazi titans, and the card's artwork by Jason Chan captures a feral, ethereal intensity that fits the set's high-fantasy, apocalyptic atmosphere.

The card was received positively by players for its efficiency, providing both a stat boost and a layer of resilience to creatures. Jason Chan’s illustration is frequently cited for its dynamic composition, depicting a predatory spirit manifesting around a hyena, which effectively communicated the card's protective function through visual storytelling. As a common card, it became a staple in various deck archetypes, particularly those focused on aggressive creature-based strategies or Aura-themed synergies.
