Provenance

Where it came from

The Hypnotic Specter originated in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to be a potent flying creature with a disruptive discard effect. The Summer Magic version, colloquially known as 'Edgar,' was a 1994 print run intended to correct errors found in the earlier Revised edition. Due to a series of miscommunications and production mishaps, nearly the entire print run was ordered to be destroyed, making the surviving cards some of the rarest and most sought-after artifacts in the game's history.

The card features iconic artwork by Douglas Shuler, whose dark, evocative style helped define the early aesthetic of the game. Shuler's depiction of the specter as a menacing, ethereal figure captured the high-fantasy gothic tone that early players found so compelling. While the artwork remains consistent with the original release, the Summer Magic print is distinguished by its unique color saturation and distinct card frame characteristics, serving as a rare, accidental testament to the chaotic early days of Wizards of the Coast.
