Provenance

Where it came from

The Icatian Javelineers were released in 1994 as part of the Fallen Empires expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the collapse of the Sarpadian empires, specifically the plight of the Icatian people, who were portrayed as a struggling human civilization forced into desperate militarization. The design of this common card was intended to reflect the scrappy, infantry-focused nature of the Icatian defense forces during this period of societal decay.

The artwork was illustrated by Susan Van Camp, who contributed significantly to the aesthetic of the early Magic expansions. Her style often leaned into a grounded, fantasy-realist depiction of characters. The Javelineers were designed to be a low-cost utility unit, meant to provide players with a recurring, albeit limited, ability to deal direct damage, fitting the tactical theme of a group of soldiers launching projectiles from the ranks.
