Icatian Javelineers

Icatian Javelineers first appeared in the 1994 Fallen Empires expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Created during a period when Wizards of the Coast sought to build deeper lore around the various factions of the Dominaria setting, the card depicts the soldiers of the Icatian empire. The set was designed to emphasize tribal synergy and small-scale tactical combat, with the Javelineers serving as a low-cost, expendable infantry unit capable of dealing focused damage to larger threats.

The artwork was provided by Edward P. Beard, Jr., a prolific illustrator known for his fantasy-themed portfolio during the early years of the game. His depiction of the Javelineers captures the gritty, militaristic aesthetic of the Icatian forces, utilizing a warm palette that aligns with the visual identity of the white mana color identity. While common cards from this era were produced in high volumes, this specific version was reprinted in the 1998 Anthologies box set, which served as a curated retrospective designed to introduce new players to iconic cards from the game's formative years.
