What it does
1 generic mana: This creature gains first strike until end of turn.
1 generic mana: This creature gains banding until end of turn. (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding you control are blocking or being blocked by a creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)
The Icatian army easily repelled early surprise attacks by the Orcs on border towns like Montford.

Where it came from
Icatian Infantry was released in 1994 as part of the Fallen Empires expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to explore the flavor of a decaying, faction-based world, featuring a unique approach where several cards had multiple versions with different illustrations. This specific card represents the militaristic Icatian society, a key faction in the set's narrative of political and civil collapse.
The artwork for this version was provided by artist Anson Maddocks, who was one of the original illustrators for the game. His style, characterized by a distinct, often gritty aesthetic, was instrumental in establishing the early visual language of the franchise. Upon release, Fallen Empires received a mixed reception from players due to its lower power level relative to previous sets, though it has since gained a dedicated following among collectors who appreciate its deep thematic world-building.
