What it does

X mana: You may choose a creature card in your hand whose mana cost could be paid by some amount of, or all of, the mana you spent on X mana. If you do, you may cast that card face down as a 2/2 creature spell without paying its mana cost. If the creature that spell becomes as it resolves has not been turned face up and would assign or deal damage, be dealt damage, or become tapped, instead it's turned face up and assigns or deals damage, is dealt damage, or becomes tapped. Activate only as a sorcery.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Illusionary Mask first appeared as a rare card in the Ice Age expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast in 1995. It was designed as part of a cycle of artifacts that utilized the game's hidden mechanics, allowing players to cast creatures face-down to disguise their identity from opponents. The card’s original artwork by Quinton Hoover became iconic for its surreal, atmospheric depiction of a shifting, ethereal visage, fitting the high-fantasy aesthetic that defined the mid-90s era of the game.

This specific iteration comes from the Collectors' Edition, a non-tournament-legal boxed set released in 1993 to offer players a high-quality, square-cornered version of the early sets. Because these cards were intended for home play rather than competitive play, they feature a distinctive gold border on the reverse side. The set was created to provide collectors with a definitive way to own cards that had already become difficult to source, and it remains a significant piece of the game's history for those documenting the evolution of its early card pool.
