What it does

X mana: You may choose a creature card in your hand whose mana cost could be paid by some amount of, or all of, the mana you spent on X mana. If you do, you may cast that card face down as a 2/2 creature spell without paying its mana cost. If the creature that spell becomes as it resolves has not been turned face up and would assign or deal damage, be dealt damage, or become tapped, instead it's turned face up and assigns or deals damage, is dealt damage, or becomes tapped. Activate only as a sorcery.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Illusionary Mask, originally introduced in the Mirage expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1996, represents a complex artifact designed to manipulate the rules of combat. The International Collectors' Edition, released in 1993 for the global market, features square-cornered, non-tournament legal cards with gold-bordered backs. This specific printing was produced as a display and collector set, aiming to provide enthusiasts with access to foundational cards from the game's earliest years.

The art for the Illusionary Mask was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a foundational artist for the early game whose style emphasized high-fantasy, theatrical motifs. Hoover's design for the mask intended to capture the feeling of deceptive, shifting identity, reflecting the card's mechanical ability to hide a creature's true nature from opponents. The card remains a notable piece of Magic history due to its intricate, often rules-heavy interactions that challenged players during the game's formative stages.
