What it does

X mana: You may choose a creature card in your hand whose mana cost could be paid by some amount of, or all of, the mana you spent on X mana. If you do, you may cast that card face down as a 2/2 creature spell without paying its mana cost. If the creature that spell becomes as it resolves has not been turned face up and would assign or deal damage, be dealt damage, or become tapped, instead it's turned face up and assigns or deals damage, is dealt damage, or becomes tapped. Activate only as a sorcery.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Illusionary Mask first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as part of the game's initial release to introduce complex mechanics centered around hidden information and deception. The card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, whose distinct, ethereal art style helped define the visual identity of early Magic cards. The design concept revolves around playing creatures face-down, a mechanic that forced opponents to guess the identity and threat level of an incoming attack.

The 30th Anniversary Edition, released in 2022, serves as a commemorative printing of iconic cards from the game's earliest history. This specific version retains the original illustration by Quinton Hoover but features a modern frame treatment and a distinct back design, intended for display and casual play rather than sanctioned tournament use. It functions as a tribute to the card's enduring legacy as a quintessential example of Magic's early experimental period.
