What it does
X mana: You may choose a creature card in your hand whose mana cost could be paid by some amount of, or all of, the mana you spent on X mana. If you do, you may cast that card face down as a 2/2 creature spell without paying its mana cost. If the creature that spell becomes as it resolves has not been turned face up and would assign or deal damage, be dealt damage, or become tapped, instead it's turned face up and assigns or deals damage, is dealt damage, or becomes tapped. Activate only as a sorcery.

Where it came from
Illusionary Mask was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the inaugural print run of Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the card emerged during a period of experimentation in game design, where the mechanics were intended to evoke the feeling of arcane exploration. The card reflects the early aesthetic of the game, characterized by a lack of uniform templating and a distinct, hand-painted art style that prioritized thematic immersion over modern competitive balance.
The artwork for Illusionary Mask was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most prominent early contributors to the game's visual identity. Rush utilized a traditional illustrative approach to depict the concept of hidden identity and deception, which aligned with the card's complex rules interaction. While the card is often cited by historians for its intricate rule set, which frequently challenged the game's early engine, it remains a quintessential example of Alpha's original creative intent and artistic direction.
