Provenance

Where it came from

Impulse was released in 1997 as part of the Visions expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Wizards of the Coast to provide blue-aligned decks with a low-cost card selection tool, it served as an essential engine for instant-speed gameplay. The card was intended to reward players for tactical decision-making, allowing them to look at the top four cards of their library and keep one, thereby smoothing out draw consistency in a high-variance format.

The original illustration for this version of Impulse was created by artist Heather Hudson. Hudson opted for a mystical and ethereal aesthetic, capturing the fleeting, intuitive nature of the spell’s effect through soft lighting and a focused, inquisitive figure. The card was well-received by the player base for its efficiency and elegance, becoming a staple in various constructed formats and remaining a reference point for similar blue utility spells in the years that followed.
