Where it came from
In the Trenches was released as part of the Secret Lair series, a specialized line of Magic: The Gathering cards introduced by Wizards of the Coast in 2019 to feature unique, curated art styles. This specific card was included in the 'Secret Lair x Street Fighter' drop, which sought to bridge the gap between traditional fantasy trading card gameplay and iconic video game intellectual properties. It reinterprets classic Magic mechanics through the lens of characters and imagery from the long-running fighting game franchise.
The card's design and illustration reflect a stylistic shift intended to honor the retro aesthetic of the Street Fighter arcade era while maintaining the functional clarity required for competitive play. By featuring characters in a dynamic, 'in the trenches' combat scenario, the art aims to evoke the tension of a one-on-one match. The reception among the player base was largely defined by the novelty of the collaboration, as it marked a significant expansion in the brand's 'Universes Beyond' initiative, which integrates external properties into the game's ecosystem.
