Where it came from
In the Trenches was released as part of The Brothers' War promo set in late 2022, capturing the grim, industrial aesthetic of the Magic: The Gathering storyline centered on the conflict between Urza and Mishra. The card design highlights the brutal, mechanical nature of the war, moving away from traditional fantasy archetypes to focus on the grit of trench warfare. The illustration, created by Volkan Baga, utilizes a muted palette and stark composition to emphasize the oppressive scale of the conflict, reflecting the creative team's intent to visually distinguish the set's technological focus from other expansions.
The card was distributed as a promotional insert, intended to offer players a thematic tie-in to the broader narrative of the brothers' century-long feud. Upon its release, it was well-received by collectors and players who favored the historical and industrial themes of the Brother's War era. The reception focused on the interplay between the card’s strategic utility in the set's unique format and its role as a narrative piece, cementing its status as an iconic representation of the expansion’s visual and thematic identity.
