Where it came from
In the Trenches was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War in late 2022. The card commemorates the lore of the war between brothers Urza and Mishra, a pivotal conflict in the game's long-running multiverse narrative. It is designed as an enchantment that provides a tactical advantage to small creatures, reflecting the gritty, attritional nature of the battle described in the set's backstory.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Campbell White, who utilized a somber, muted color palette to emphasize the bleak reality of mechanical warfare. The design aims to capture the thematic essence of infantry soldiers holding their ground amidst the devastation of the Antiquities War. Upon release, it was received primarily as a niche utility card, valued more for its thematic resonance with the set's historical flavor than for high-level competitive dominance.
