Where it came from
Infernal Idol was released in 2022 as part of the Jumpstart 2022 set for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to facilitate the set's unique play pattern, which focuses on chaotic, synergy-driven themes that allow players to jump directly into a game without the need for traditional deck construction. It embodies the high-risk, high-reward flavor often associated with black-aligned artifact cards in the game's broader lore.
The artwork for this particular printing was illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, an artist known for his contributions to the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. His work on the piece aims to convey a sense of dark, ritualistic power, using deep shadows and sharp highlights to emphasize the idol's unsettling nature. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, flavorful inclusion for Commander and casual formats, praised for its role in enabling strategic sacrifice mechanics.
