Where it came from
Infernal Spawn of Infernal Spawn of Evil was released in 2020 as part of the Unsanctioned set, a standalone silver-bordered Magic: The Gathering product designed for casual, humorous play. The card is a direct callback to the original Infernal Spawn of Evil from the 2004 Unhinged set, continuing a lineage of intentionally recursive, complex card design that pokes fun at the game's mechanics and naming conventions.
The card was illustrated by Dave Kendall, who leaned into the absurd, layered narrative suggested by the title. The design centers on the meta-joke of creating an escalating cycle of creatures, a hallmark of the Un-sets which prioritize novelty and player experience over competitive legality. It was received by the community as a whimsical collector's piece that highlights Wizards of the Coast's willingness to experiment with self-referential humor.
