Where it came from
Inferno of the Star Mounts was released in 2021 as part of the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set, a unique crossover expansion that integrated the mechanics and lore of Dungeons & Dragons into the Magic: The Gathering card game. The card features Klauth, an iconic ancient red dragon from D&D lore known for his immense power and hoard. Its design captures the essence of a dragon’s breath weapon and legendary status, functioning as a high-impact mythic rare card intended for aggressive playstyles.
The artwork was illustrated by Games Workshop veteran and fantasy artist Svetlin Velinov, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic over many years. Velinov’s portrayal emphasizes the scale and menace of the dragon, utilizing a vibrant color palette to highlight the inferno theme. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its flavor-accurate representation of Klauth and its balanced yet formidable abilities in the Commander format.
