Where it came from
The Inkling token was released as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander set in 2021. Designed to represent a creature type central to the Silverquill college, which focuses on magic derived from words and ink, the token was created to support the mechanics introduced in the set. The art depicts a small, shadowy, avian creature manifesting from magical ink, reflecting the aesthetic themes of the Prismari and Silverquill factions.
The illustration was handled by the Wizards of the Coast art department, maintaining the visual language of the Ikoria and Strixhaven era of Magic: The Gathering. As a token, it was designed as a functional gameplay aid rather than a collector's centerpiece, produced to be discarded or repurposed during matches. Despite its functional nature, the token has been well-received by players for its thematic cohesion with the 'ink-casting' motifs of its home set.
