Provenance

Where it came from

The Inkling token was released as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2021. Created to represent the spell-summoned creatures associated with the Prismari college, the token serves as a physical manifestation of the college's focus on artistic expression and elemental magic. These tokens were included in official Commander preconstructed decks and booster packs to support mechanics that generate creature copies or manifestations during gameplay.

The artwork for this specific token was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast to reflect the aesthetic of Strixhaven's campus, emphasizing the theme of liquid ink manifesting as magical entities. Illustrators for the Strixhaven set were tasked with bridging the gap between traditional fantasy tropes and the academic, scholarly environment of a magical university. The design focuses on fluid, swirling forms that align with the chaotic and creative energy of the Prismari faction, and the token has since been well-received by players for its thematic cohesion with the set's unique artistic direction.
