Where it came from
The Inkling token was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Strixhaven: School of Mages. These tokens represent the unique magical constructs created by the Prismari and Silverquill colleges at the Strixhaven University, a wizarding school themed around academic life and magical disciplines. As a token, this card was not intended for booster pack main slots but served as a necessary utility to track creatures generated by various spells and abilities within the set.
The illustration for this specific Inkling iteration was created by artist Bryan Sola. The design leans into the ethereal, living-ink aesthetic of the plane, depicting a creature composed of swirling, semi-liquid magical script and shadow. The piece was well-received for its distinct visual identity, which successfully communicated the 'living magic' concept central to the school’s lore while maintaining the cohesive artistic standards expected of the game’s collectible supplemental cards.
