Where it came from
Inner Fire was released in 2005 as part of the Saviors of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to embody the set's central 'hand size matters' mechanic, which rewarded players for maintaining a large number of cards in their hand, a departure from the traditional fast-paced play style of previous sets.
The artwork was illustrated by Dave Dorman, a renowned fantasy and science fiction artist celebrated for his work on the Star Wars franchise. Dorman utilized his signature rich, painterly style to capture the intense, ethereal nature of the spell, depicting a figure drawing power from spiritual flames to fit the Japanese folklore-inspired setting of the Kamigawa block.
