Where it came from
Interplanar Tunnel was released as part of the Planes cards in the 2016 Planechase Anthology, a compilation set designed to revitalize the multiplayer Planechase format for Magic: The Gathering. These oversized cards function as the mechanical heart of the game, representing shifting planar locations that impose global effects on all players. This card specifically embodies the chaotic, travel-oriented nature of the multiverse, serving as a tactical tool to cycle through dimensions during gameplay.
The visual design of the card leans into the high-fantasy, cosmic aesthetic characteristic of the Magic multiverse, intended to evoke the sensation of traversing raw magical space. While individual Planes cards often feature work by various artists contributing to the overarching lore, the art direction for the Anthology set aimed for a cohesive, immersive experience that bridges the gap between disparate game settings. It was received by the player base as a functional utility piece that streamlined the occasionally cumbersome mechanics of navigating the Blind Eternities.
